The chapters in this book were written mainly by researchers at IRIDeS. Experts in various fields of disaster science, these authors summarized problems revealed by the GEJE, progress in the 10 years since the GEJE and issues that remain today, from the viewpoint of their respective fields of expertise, such as engineering, science, medicine, and social science.      The book consists of 51 chapters, with one topic per chapter, and four additional columns based on the 4 major themes of: disaster assessment and disaster prevention; humans and society; health; and domestic and international collaboration. Accessible to a general audience from high school students to adults, the book is written to be easily understood by the general public, and provides an interdisciplinary and multifaceted view of the GEJE and its subsequent history. The Japanese book was published in March 2021, and this English translation was published in November 2022, with the goal to share these lessons with a broader international audience.   *©IRIDes, Tohoku University 2022.
